A member of the New Patriotic Party's National Communication team, Mohammed Awal, has disclosed that it was anticipated for Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen to withdraw from the race for the party's flagbearer position.
Awal Mohammed made this revelation during an appearance on GBC's Focus Show on September 6, 2023, in response to Alan Kyerematen's recent withdrawal from the race.
He asserted that Kyerematen's resignation did not come as a surprise, given his history of stepping down from competitive flagbearer elections.
"It was expected that Alan would withdraw from the election," he remarked.
Awal recounted that in 2007, Alan Kyerematen resigned entirely from the New Patriotic Party after losing to the then-candidate, who is now the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, despite being the most established candidate at the time. He emphasized that it has become a recurring pattern in Kyerematen's history when internal party elections do not seem to favor him.
Furthermore, Awal highlighted that both Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia and Kennedy Ohene Agyapong actively prepared for the flagbearer race, while Alan rested on his past popularity. He noted that Kyerematen's withdrawal had been anticipated not only by himself but also by others closely monitoring the proceedings.
Awal also pointed out that the former Minister of Trade and Industry is known for his absence from active party engagements once the election is over and tends to re-engage when the next election cycle approaches.
